Upholstery Cleaning Codes: What W, S, WS and X Mean
That little tag under your cushion decides what your couch can survive. Here is what each code means in plain words, where to find the tag, and what we do for each one.

One wrong method can ruin a good couch
Water on the wrong fabric leaves rings or shrinks the fibers. Solvent on the wrong fabric can strip color. The tag exists so none of that happens.
Tag is hard to find
It hides under cushions, on the frame underside, or inside a zip cover. Many owners have never seen it.
Letters mean nothing alone
W, S, WS and X look like alphabet soup until someone explains them in plain words tied to your couch.
DIY ignores the code
Rental machines and sprays assume every fabric takes water. On S and X fabrics, that assumption leaves real damage.
No tag at all
Older or custom pieces often lost their tag years ago. Cleaning blind is how couches get ruined.
How we handle every code
We read the tag, test a hidden spot, and match the method to the letter.
Find the tag
We look under cushions and on the frame. If it is missing, we move to a hidden spot test instead of guessing.
Read it
W, S, WS or X each points to a method. The table below shows what each one means in plain words.
Test first
A hidden spot gets tested for color bleeding and texture change before the visible fabric is touched.
Match method
Water-based, solvent, or dry-only: the code decides, and we follow it exactly.
| Code | What it means | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| W | Water-based cleaning is safe | Low-moisture extraction and rinse |
| S | Solvent only, no water | Dry solvent cleaning, no water |
| WS | Water or solvent both work | We pick based on soil and stains |
| X | Vacuum only, no liquids | Dry methods; honest expectations set |
| No tag | Unknown fabric | Hidden spot test, gentlest safe method |
What cleaning can and cannot do
Codes keep cleaning safe, but they do not make every fabric fully restorable.
X means dry only
X-code fabric gets vacuuming and dry methods only. We will tell you honestly what that can and cannot achieve.
No tag needs caution
Without a tag we test carefully and choose the gentlest safe method, which can mean a lighter clean.
Codes do not fix wear
A code tells us how to clean safely. It does not reverse sun fading or threadbare spots.

Where to find your furniture tag
Start under the seat cushions. Most manufacturers sew the tag to the frame beneath them, or to the underside of a cushion. Check the bottom of the piece too, where tags sometimes hang near the dust cover. On recliners, look under the footrest or behind the back. If the piece has zip-off cushion covers, the tag may be sewn inside one of them.
Found a tag with more than letters, like cleaning instructions in sentences? The letter code is what matters for us. And if there is truly no tag, do not clean blind. A hidden spot test tells us how the fabric reacts to moisture and cleaner, and we choose the gentlest method that still works. That caution is exactly what keeps an unknown fabric safe.
- Check under every cushion
- Look at the frame underside
- Note the letter code
- No tag? We test first
Upholstery codes: W, S, WS, X: your questions
Where exactly is the cleaning code tag?
Usually under the seat cushions or on the frame beneath them. Check the piece's underside and inside zip-off covers too.
What if my couch has no tag?
We test a hidden spot for color and texture reaction, then use the gentlest method that works. No tag never means no cleaning, just more care.
Can you clean an X-code couch?
With dry methods only, yes. X means no water or solvent liquids. We vacuum and dry-clean, and we set honest expectations before starting.
Does WS mean I can use my carpet cleaner on it?
WS allows water, but a couch is not carpet. Too much water still risks the cushion and frame, so low-moisture extraction is the safer route.
Why did the store not explain the code to me?
Most stores never mention it. The tag is written for cleaners, not shoppers, which is why we read it for you on every visit.
